In The End

September 14, 1998

Sonny Corinthos sat on the beach staring out into the ocean. He felt the water as the tide came in and the waves gently glided under his feet, almost as if it could magically sweep him away. And he wanted it to. He wished the tide would just wash him away. He would do anything not to feel the empty hole inside him now. He would do anything not to feel this loss and the sense of hopelessness that he was left with.

Jason said that he thought it happened really fast. There wasn't any time to save her. The car had gone over the cliff and just crashed into rocks and then into the water. Her body hand' t been recovered. She had just disappeared into the ocean, she was gone forever. They said that Jax had done everything that he could, and deep down Sonny knew he had.

The sun was coming up. Sonny hadn't slept in days; he just kept sitting there. He sat there on the beach waiting for someone to come tell him that there was a mistake. He wanted to wait on the beach so he could at least see what she saw. He wanted to hear the sounds she heard, and feel all of things she felt. As if that might somehow bring her back to him. He just felt closer to her. There he could pretend that she wasn't really gone. He could imagine turning around and seeing her standing there like she had been waiting for him all along.

He turned and looked down the empty beach. He was alone, and Brenda was gone.

Chapter 2

The next day Sonny arrived in Port Charles and went to Jason's first. He was greeted by Johnny and Sonny only nodded. When Johnny opened the door for him, he saw Robin sitting on the couch with tears streaming her face. When she saw him she started to cry harder as she ran toward him and threw her arms around his neck. Sonny held her as shook with each sob and he saw Jason coming down the stairs. He looked as if they had a rough night and Sonny could only imagine how devastated Robin was. He slowly pulled away from her, unable to stand her pain in addition to his own. He tried to smile at her as a tear made it's way down his own face.

R: I am so glad that you are here. (holding onto his hand)
S: I needed to be here. (He pulled away and walked over to the couch)

He sat down as Robin & Jason followed.

S: Where's Mike?
J: He's on his way over. I sent Pat for him.
R: He's taking it pretty hard.
S: He loved her. He loved her like family.

The door opens and Mike walks in as Sonny turns to see him. They both just look at each other and in that moment Mike sees the depth of his son's pain. Sonny walks toward him and he feels like a floodgate is being opened inside and all of the grief just comes spilling out. Mike holds him as they both cry for Brenda and all of the dreams that died with her.

That night Sonny stood at the window overlooking the docks and the river. He stared out into nothing like he done so many times before. After Lily died, he would stand at that window for hours, seeing her walk to car in his mind. Now he stood there remembering Brenda. This wasn't the way it was supposed to be.

R: What are you looking at?
S: Nothing. Everything.
R: (nodding) Do you want something to eat? I can make you something.
S: No, No thanks.

Robin felt helpless watching him. He had given up his life for Brenda's happiness and now it seemed like such a waste.

S: You know, I keep thinking about the last time that we talked. She came to the penthouse when she figured out I was here. She walked around the corner and saw me. She just looked at me with all that pain and saddness in her eyes. That's the first time that I really knew what I had done to her.
R: She loved you Sonny.
S: Yeah. She said that I hurt her worse than anybody in her whole life.
R: You did it to save her. She finally understood that.
S: She hated me for it Robin. That night at the warehouse, she didn't even look at me.
R: You know, I asked her about that. (Sonny turns to look at her) She said that she lost you because of that life and that Jax was the only security she had in the whole world. That night your life, your world, almost took that too. Sonny, she knew the explosion wasn't your fault but it was because of the organization & Jerry that Jax almost died. She told me that you told Jerry to stay away from them.
S: How did she know that?
R: Jax told her. She said that she thought you were still trying to protect her. She said that she thought you just wanted her to be happy.
S: She said that?
R: Sonny, she knew how much you loved her.

Robin walks upstairs as Sonny stares out the window.

Chapter 3

The next day is the service, and Sonny arrives early hoping to pay his respects before Jax gets there. Sonny walks in and Jax is sitting in the front row alone. Jax turns to see who walked in, and sees Sonny.

S: Hey, I'm sorry. I'll come back.
J: You can stay. (turning back around)
Sonny walks slowly to the front and sits down across the aisle from Jax. Jax looks truly distraught and doesn't look at Sonny.

J: Do you know the worst part?
(glancing at Sonny and Sonny sort of shrugs)
You are the only person who has any idea how I feel. You feel it too, don't you? That heaviness that feels like it's just crushing your chest and you feel like you can't breathe. (Sonny nods)
When she left me, and went back to you, I thought I knew what it felt like to lose her. I don't know how to live in a world that she's not even a part of.

S: I could live knowing that she was here. There were people to love her. Friends, Family. I knew that she was alive and she was happy. I could live knowing that I might not ever see her face again, but that she was out there somewhere smiling.
It wasn't supposed to be like this.

J: Brenda would hate it if the people she loved were divided between us. Robin & Mike were so important to her. She loved them. Brenda loved with her whole heart, she didn't hold back. That's what today is about. The people that loved her and the people Brenda loved. And as much as I have hated it throughout the years, that includes you.

Jax stands and walks down the aisle to the entrance of the church. Sonny sits their alone remembering Brenda and the moments that they shared.

Chapter 4
September 11, 2000

Sonny Corinthos looked around his office as he took a drink of this cognac. He was back on top, and no one could stop him now. He had made more money than he had ever dreamed possible. He had been vicious and cold. He had been heartless at times, and he felt no guilt or remorse. He was angry, infact he was furious because none of it had made him feel any better. None of it had filled the emptiness or stopped the pain. He grabbed his jacket and turned out the lights. He walked slowly outside and looked up at the stars. He took another drink of the cognac and felt the warmth go through his whole body. He walked out onto the beach and headed towards the shoreline like he had so often. It had been two years, and it felt like yesterday. He tried to push it from his mind but it was useless. She always found him; he had always been powerless when it came to her.

He felt a raindrop fall on his face as the tears finally came. He couldn't tell which were the tears and which was the rain as they both began to fall faster and harder. He remembered the day of their wedding and how he stood outside in the rain. He watched her crying in the doorway. She was a picture of devastation and it hurt to even look at her. He remembered Jason pulling her back inside and he fought the feeling inside that told him to go to her. It was that moment that would stand out in his memory. They say that in every great mistake there is a halfway point, a moment when you can still turn back. That was the moment.

Sonny stood and looked up to the black blanket above him.
"I know I was wrong" he screamed as the rain beat down on his face. He blinked his eyes and struggled to see.
" Oh God," he said falling to his knees "I know I was wrong."
The thunder crashed and a bolt of lightening lit up the sky. He saw someone walking on the beach. It was woman and now she was running towards him. He couldn't see her clearly and the rain kept pouring down on him. Then he heard her- she was calling out to him- "Sonny". It was like a ghost coming to life and he didn't care. He didn't care if it was real. He didn't care if it was all in his mind as he started to run towards her. As he got closer he could tell she was crying and as she went to grab her he realized that she was really there. It wasn't a dream, she was real.

They kissed each other's faces as the tears and the rain all mingled together. Brenda was laughing through her tears as she kissed every inch of his face. He couldn't believe she was there, he was actually holding her in his arms.
B: I knew that we would find each other.
S: Are you okay? Brenda, they told me you were dead.
B: Dead? No, I just had to find you so I left. I knew that you would be looking for me, but it was too dangerous for you to come for me.
S: What?
B: Jason said that you weren't coming to the church. He said that you didn't want me anymore. But I knew that you were just trying to protect me and that you couldn't come for me as long as I was there. I figured it out. I knew that they were going to try to kill you and I thought if I could just get away, we would find each other. Honey, I was so upset, but I didn't believe Jason. I know that you love me.
S: Brenda, what about Jax? Why didn't you tell Jax?
B: Jax was with V in Malibu. I talked to him before the wedding. Don't you remember? He sent us that gift.
S: Yeah.

Sonny didn't understand what she was talking about. She wasn't making any sense. Maybe she got hurt in the accident and she doesn't remember what happened. He took her inside and sat her down in his office as he searched for a blanket or towel. She was shivering and he wanted to make sure she was okay.
He draped a blanket around her shoulders and led her through a door that led to an apartment over his office. He fixed them both a cognac. Brenda took it from him.
B: You know I don't drink this stuff.
S: A couple of sips won't kill you. You're cold.
B: (nods, smiling)) okay.
S: Brenda, where have you been? Where did you go?
B: I went with my mother. She came back to Port Charles.
S: Yeah, Robin said that she just showed up.
B: Robin? Well, I guess I must have called her before I left. I really missed having her to talk to. I mean, we still talked but Paris is just so far away. Anyway, Veronica showed up before I left, so we just left together.

Brenda was smiling like it was the most logical thing she could say, and Sonny knew that something was terribly wrong. He just didn't want to push her.

B: Honey, why are we talking about everyone except us? Aren't you happy to see me?

Sonny comes to her and kneels in front of her. He takes her hands in his and looks into her eyes.

S: Seeing you on the beach, hearing your voice call my name, touching your face, kissing these lips, it was the best moment of my life.
B: (smiling now) Do you have any idea how much I love you?

Sonny takes her face in his hands and kisses her softly

S: I love you Brenda.
B: Sonny, hold me close, and don't ever let go okay? I need you so bad. God, I've just ached for you.

Brenda starts to kiss him more passionately and Sonny pulls back alittle.

S: Brenda,
B: Don't say anything. (she kisses him and stares into his eyes) Don't you know that I would go anywhere and do anything just to be with you? Don't you know that by now?

Sonny picks her up and carries her to his bed. He took her wet clothes off and coveres her with blankets. Then he lays down with her. Brenda begins to kiss him again.

B: Sonny, I want you.
S: We've got plenty of time sweetheart. We've got the rest of our lives.

Sonny pulls her close to him and stays with her until she falls asleep.

He kept going over everything she had said and kept wondering what had happened. He needed to call Jason. Sonny knew that Robin would be marrying Jax soon and he didn't know how to handle all of this.

Jason answers the phone in the penthouse.

S: It's me.
J: Hey, what's up?
S: You aren't going to believe what happened tonight. Are you alone?
J: Yeah. Carly & Michael are at Bobbie's.
S: I was on the beach earlier. Well, you know what today is. Anyway, it started to rain, and I see this woman on the beach running towards me. Jason, I don't know, I just knew. I can't explain it. It was Brenda. She's alive.

J: Sonny, there's something that I didn't tell you about the accident. Brenda was having some tests done before it happened. Apparently her mom had some sort of weird mental illness. It's hereditary and Brenda was being tested before the accident.
S: Why didn't you tell me about this? What do you know about this illness?
J: I don't know. Robin wanted you to think that Brenda was happy. She thought it would be easier for you. All I know is that the condition is fatal. Eventually her mind just kind of disintegrates
S: What did the test say? Did she have it?
J: I don't know. I don't think Jax ever got the results. I don't think that he really wanted to know.
S: Jason, I have to find out the results of that test before anyone else can know about this.
J: I'll see what I can do.

Sonny didn't know what to do. Brenda thought they had finally found each other and it should have been the happiest day of his life. But how could he pretend that everything was fine? He would have to tell Robin & Jax and Brenda doesn't even remember that she & Jax were going to get married. It was crazy and he would probably lose her again.

He went back into the bedroom to check on her and the bed was empty. He called her name as he noticed the balcony door was open. Her clothes were gone. Brenda was gone. Sonny ran out onto the beach screaming her name over & over. He ran down the beach looking for her. There wasn't any sign that she had ever been there at all. It was like it had all been a dream.
